Climate Change and its Relation to Sexual and Reproductive Health and Gender-Based Violence

Project Overview

This project explored the interconnections between climate change, sexual and reproductive health (SRH), and gender-based violence (GBV) in marginalized communities in Palestine. Implemented by Nature Palestine Society in partnership with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and the Palestinian Medical Relief Society (PMRS), the initiative aimed to strengthen awareness and capacity among youth and women to understand and respond to the social and health impacts associated with climate-related environmental stressors. The project

combined training, community engagement, and research to generate evidence and promote informed dialogue on these interconnected challenges.

Objectives

To increase awareness and understanding among youth and women about the links between climate change, sexual and reproductive health, and gender-based violence, and to promote community engagement in addressing these interconnected challenges.

Key Activities

The project implemented a series of interactive trainings and community workshops designed to explore the relationship between climate change impacts and health and social outcomes. Participants engaged in group discussions, role-playing exercises, and practical learning sessions linking environmental changes to health risks and gender dynamics. Field-based components included activities related to sustainable agriculture and environmental management, allowing participants to connect environmental practices with broader health and social issues. In parallel, the project conducted a survey among youth to assess their knowledge and perceptions regarding climate change, SRH, and GBV. The findings informed the development of an analytical research paper and policy-oriented recommendations.

Results and Impact

The project enhanced awareness among participating youth and women regarding the complex relationships between climate change, reproductive health, and gender-based violence. The survey results revealed important knowledge gaps among young people and provided evidence to inform future programming and policy discussions. The project also produced educational materials and a research-based white paper outlining key findings and recommendations for strengthening youth engagement and policy responses to climate-related social and health challenges.

Strategic Contribution

This initiative contributes to advancing integrated approaches to climate action by linking environmental change with public health and social dimensions. By highlighting the connections between climate stressors, health vulnerabilities, and gender inequality, the project supports more inclusive and gender-responsive climate adaptation strategies. It also strengthens youth engagement in policy dialogue and contributes to expanding the evidence base on climate-related health and social impacts in Palestine.
